Resolved Question: The truth about going far away to college. Is it really such a bad thing?

I live in a small town in Arkansas with a population of 900. I'm also a junior in a high school with a student body of just under 300 people and a class of only 11 students. So, I'm pretty close to as small town as it gets. I plan on going into environmental studies when I go to college, and dream of studying in places such as Seattle or Olympia, Washington, or Charelston, South Carolina. It seems like my parents and my peers are discouraging these options because they're so far away from where my family lives, as if I wouldn't be able to handle being so far away. However, I could be home at Christmas and during the summer. Is going so far away from home for college such a bad thing? I wanted opinions from people around the country/world.
